CCST Receives Gold Standard Interrnship Host Seal
The National Space Research Institute (INPE) Center for Earth System Science (CCST) has been recognized with the Internship Host seal, the Gold Standard Internship Host, for supporting the University of Oxford internship programs with excellence and quality.
Oxford University is a public higher education institution in England which is considered one of the top five universities on the planet. The scholarship program places are for postgraduate, masters and doctoral programs, offered to students from all over the world.
In Brazil, only CCST / INPE, IEE / USP, and a private company participate in The Summer Internship Program at Oxford University. CCST joined the program in 2015 and in 2018 received five students. In 2019, there were three students.
Institutions selected for the Gold Standard Awards were judged on the following criteria: three or more years in the program, overall quality of intern feedback, internship offer consistency, student and Internship Office email responsiveness, response, constructive feedback and provision of resources for trainees.
Some 2018 students left their reports about their experience in Brazil and in particular at CCST / INPE.
Alexander Doren, attending the 3rd year of undergraduate studies (of a 4-year course) at the time, conducted a research project on land use and biodiversity in the Cerrado biome in Brazil. According to him, “Brazil is an amazing and extremely beautiful country, and having the opportunity to do interesting research in such a fantastic place seems unreal.”
Edward Clennett, also a third year graduate, worked on a project on severe weather and lightning during the 6 weeks he was at CCST. “My summer at INPE was definitely the best experience I ever had. This not only helped me with my career aspirations, but also convinced me that I could pursue a doctorate or research profession and introduce myself to an amazing country. ”
Joshua Gowdy, 3rd year of math, worked on a project comparing the potential of wind and solar energy in three locations in Brazil. It used wind speed and solar irradiance data to which the CCST had access through the SONDA network. “I loved my time in Brazil and the country left a good impression, I want to go back and live in São Paulo. This particular city was a great place for music, art, young people and to me it seemed like a lively place. ”
At the end of the internship program, participants always give a 15- to 30-minute presentation showing the results of their research.
The Gold Standard Internship Host badge will be displayed on the CCST and Graduate website.
