(1) “Investigation into the Cloud Edge Effect at Brasilia and Petrolina”
Student: Hayley Firth
Supervisors: Enio Bueno Pereira, Madeleine Sánchez Gácita Casagrande, Francisco José Lopes de Lima e Eduardo dos Santos Pereira – Laboratório de Modelagem e Estudos de Recursos Renováveis de Energia.
The talk will cover how clouds can amplify irradiation hitting Earth’s surface, the ways in which this can occur, and the different thresholds to categorize this phenomenon. Many interesting patterns were seen in the Brasilia January and Petrolina February data sets, which includes sky camera images, and will be discussed.
(2) “Understanding the Cerrado Region of Brazil and Its Projected Changes”
Student: Louis Wood
Supervisor: Manoel Cardoso – Interação Biosfera-Atmosfera
The talk will examine the biodiversity of the Cerrado region of Brazil with respect to climate and land use, as well as their projected changes. I will first look at the relation between the biodiversity in the region and various bioclimatic variables, such as mean annual temperature and precipitation seasonality. Then, by considering the predicted changes in climate and land use to the year 2050, the areas of high biodiversity to be most affected can be identified. While most studies of this nature examine the effects of these changes on a certain species or genus, this talk will look at the effect on the region as a whole.
